We take about 20,000 to 25,000 breaths everyday! However, due to our busy schedule we often don't have the opportunity to think about or be actively aware of our breathing. Situational factors such as peer and work pressure, deadlines and disagreements directly affect our breathing, putting us in a constant panic mode and fight and flight situations. These factors trigger alarming amounts of shallow breathing, causing headaches, fatigue and stress.
These factors also affect our breathing rate that from 30-60 breaths per minute (infant) to only 12-16 per minute at the age of adolescence. In severe conditions shallow breathing may lead to low oxygen levels in the body and weakens the natural immune system of the body.
